ShurMed EMS guarantees that certified paramedic accompanies all of our ventilated patients. Book TransportationShurMed accepts all insurance programs that cover ambulatory transport. We accept insurance plans ranging from private insurance plans to Medicare, Medicaid and TriCare.
Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) may pay for limited, medically necessary, nonemergency ambulance transportation. Medicare covers dialysis transport (e.g., End-Stage Renal Disease), wound care for sharp debridement or hyperbaric, ER, hospital discharge, and Skilled Nursing Facility or SNF Discharge. Medicare Part B does not pay for doctor’s appointments or wheelchair van transportation.
You must have a signed written order from your doctor, i.e., Physician’s Certification Statement, stating that ambulance transportation is medically necessary.
Medicaid covers doctor’s appointments, dialysis transport (e.g., End-Stage Renal Disease), wound care for sharp debridement or hyperbaric, ER, hospital discharge, and Skilled Nursing Facility or SNF Discharge. Medicaid does not cover wheelchair van transportation.
Before transport, Prior Authorization Number (PAN) must be provided.
The level of ambulance care is determined by the necessary intervention. In a Basic Life Support (BLS) ambulance, the patient is transported by at least 2 ShurMed state-trained staff who are authorized to operate all lifesaving and life-sustaining equipment on board the vehicle. Although considered a non-emergency transport, EMT is present to perform essential advanced techniques and to administer medications if necessary.
Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulances are used for emergency transportation that may require the administration of cardiac medications, intubation, IV or EKG. ALS ambulances are staffed with a paramedic and EMT-Intermediate or EMT-Basic qualified medic.
Yes. The patient’s right to choose ambulance service providers is protected under federal law. You have the right to choose your service provider regardless of who your insurance company says they prefer. Talk with a ShurMed representative guidance in this situation.

Unfortunately, wheelchair service is only covered on a very limited basis. Most insurance plans do not cover wheelchair transportation services.
